Hello Friends.
Including my trip to the gun show I also stopped at Walmart and bought some cleaning solvent. I purchased Rusty Duck BP solvent and plan on using it the next time out. I know that a lot of people just use water, and that's fine for your gun but I can't bring myself to do it, all my life I have been taught that water is a guns mortal enemy. I just want to here what you think and if there is something better to use or cheaper which is also better. I feel that gun is like a women and that you have to treat her right or you'll just end up with problems and even if you treat her right you could still end up with problems. (The above statement is in noway ment to offend women, I like women, alot.) Anyway I just want everyone to put their 2 cents in. Everyone Have a Merry Christmas!

Hi Andy
I didn't know you had a working gun yet. Rusty Duck is new to me.Have you used it yet?
For myself I begin with Window washing fluid ,like windex. Its mostly water with other stuff added. I get the barrel cleaned up with that. I always finish with Ballistol. The best stuff I have ever used to get the last bit of corrosive salts nullified. No after rust at all. Even with long storage. Almost anything will work if you intend to use the gun again soon. To be sure though ,Ballistol is the best.
You can do all the cleaning with Ballistol if you want and it makes a great patch lube too.
I use the most corrosive caps on earth. Home made using toy cap gun caps for the explosive. You can almost watch the gun rust when using them. They are dirt cheap to use though. This is in keeping with the theme of this forum.

My Father taught me to use pidgeon's milk (engineers oil in water), but I used boiling water. With the cleaning or ramrod and patch or tow you suck up the boiling water and pump it out again untill barrel is clean, then give a light coat of oil or leave as is. The barrel will be too hot to hold, so use a rag. The heat dries it out. When in the woods, do the same thing with cold water, but dry the barrel in front of the camp/cooking fire.

I've had good luck with Windshield washer fluid followed by drying out and light oiling for short term storage or RIG on a swab down the barrel for long term

Out in the field, with a little fouling, I use good ole hydrogen peroxide. Just plug up the vent hole and fill the barrel almost full and let her buble away. Dry witha few patches and I'm good to go. Also helps on the drum of the little bulls Hawken. Clean as normal with hot soapy water at the corral, etc,etc,etc.

when i am hunting and cleaning between shots i use rubbing alcohol but once i get home hot soapy water followed by a good coating of ballistol.
