Hi whomever may be looking
I'm about giving up on the very pitted Mountain Rifle barrel. I'm cleaning it up and setting it aside. I now have a new condition Lyman GP rifle barrel to make fit into the mountain rifle stock. It' going to be a effort .I have to change out the breach end and mod the wedge fittings but it will be worth it.A smooth load at last. I hope to have it in soon. Will report soon on results. n.h.schmidt

Hi Ironwood
Looks like it you and me
I would post pic but,I don't really know how. Maybe the next time my oldest get home ,he can show me what to do.
The conversion goes well so far. I'm now waiting on some parts. I have since found out that Deer Creek can supply a nearly drop in new barrel for this gun. It also costs less than what I have already paid for the GPR barrel. I hope it turns out to be worth the effort.
I did attend a local BP match last sunday. I used my 30 year old K-Mart Monark Hawkens. The one that I installed a longer kentucky barrel on. The barrel being made from the same factory. I did ok .tied for first with two targets and fourth on a third target and scored low on the fourth but 100yd target.
Its a .45 and very picky about a good load. So far the only good shooting load has been. .433 dia ball. .019 ticking patch, spit lubed and 50 grs of ffg goex. It can shoot under 2" groups at 50yds. Well at least its cheap to shoot. n.h.schmidt

I have a .40 caliber barrel for my Pennsylvania Hunter. It's percussion. I wish I had gotten into flintlocks a long time ago. It's a tack driver but I can't shoot all that good anymore. I'm trying to get hooked up with some BP shooters in this area. Doesn't seem like anyone in my rifle club is interested in any kind of black powder group shoot.

If you would like I can tell you how to post photos if you have a digital camera. You will have to have a web host. http://www.photobucket.com is a web host and it's free. Take a look at the website. It's kind of easy to get an account set up. It's really not all that hard to post photos on here. Smile Let me know if I can help.

Hi Guys
As promised I fitted the GPR Barrel into the CVA Mountain Rifle stock. A big pain but is now done. I have had it out twice. It sure loads a lot smoother . Accuracy has only been good so far. My best group was using a 64gr equiv of RS pyro with a 490 ball. Lehigh patch lube and .019 ticking patch. I put six shots in under two inches. Also tried was 64 grs of ffg Goex. Same everything and cleaning between shots. Groups were about three inches most of the time. Patches looked great and could have been shot again .I'm always looking for better ,someday I'll find it. All testing was at 50yds.

That's great! Glad it worked out so good. I really had trouble with Pyrodex here in East Texas. Usually in the fall we have very high humidity and I got lots of mis-fires with Pyrodex and Triple 7. I shoot nothing but real balck powder now and haven't had any mis-fires in my precussion rifles.

Hi Guys
I got the rifle out again. Its been pretty bad weather here for a couple of weeks ,so it took a while to get out. The rifle seems to be getting better and better. The groups are now more like 1.5" with Pyro RS Select and about as good with FFG Goex. This time I was using Hoppes No 9+ patch lube. Its fairly easy to get and really works . Keeps the loading easy. Same wt powder charge of 64grs of FFG black. Ignition was fast even with the pyro . I used Rws and CCI mag caps on a hot shot nipple. I'm going to a BP match this sunday . I'm going to use this rifle and see what happens. n.h.schmidt
