For sighting in I perfer the range. For having fun I had rather shoot at my hunting camp. A past tornado blew over a huge oak excactly 50 yards from the porch of my trailer down at the lease. That stump makes a great bullet stop. Smile

I have been to a range only one time and then I didn't feel at ease. I don't like to shoot around people I don't know.
I do my shooting here at home. I have targets set up at 25, 50, and 100 yards for target shooting from the end of the deck. Election signs (after the election) make perfect target stands.
For handgun and playing Jose Wales, I have a cable stretched across a cutout in the hill side that I hang plastic bottles on. For me they are hard to hit once they get to swinging.

I've always had a place to shoot in the woods and have done almost all of my shooting there. Then last Feb. I went to 'Ben Avery Range' north of Phoenix AZ for the NMLRA spring shoot. I camped out there for a week and shot all but the first and last days. What a blast!!! National match shooting with a great group. Maybe the range shooting really isn't bad..I will be back there next year with my new (not approved by you) inline rifle. Also hope to have traditional rifles put together for next year. I am now gathering parts for a 40cal cap lock. This year I had to shoot my old H&R 58 cal. with round ball (1in70 twist) and 100gr. powder. "DONE GOOD" I brought home three medals. Boy was I surprised.

Howdy DandJofAZ,
A week of camping and shooting, now that sounds like fun. I think a person could learn a lot there. Sounds like you had a ball. (pun intended) Congrats on the medals. I like to hear about people having fun.
Personally I (me) approve of everything from a bow and arrow to the 50 BMG. Just so one enjoys themselves.
Just have fun.
