I have an Uberti 61 Police thats giving me headaches! If I use more than about 12 grains of fff black powder behind a .375 round ball the hammer goes almost to half cock upon fireing. This allows the spent cap to fall between hammer and frame thus tying up the gun. This gun, like most Ubertis I've owned, has a soft mainspring - I'm wondering if perhaps this causes the problem? Has anyone else had this kind of problem with their 61's? Anyone have a fix? Thanks,

Ned

I sold mine but if i recall correctly i ordered a mainspring made by pietta for their 61 and that took care of it! you may have a minor amount of filing to do. I had almost three dozen cap and ball revolvers at one time and i never understood why so many people prefer Ubertis over piettas since the piettas are almost always the most accurate! if you dont believe me then take a pietta 1858 and uberti 1858 to the range along with a pietta and uberti 1860 and try different loads with them both and i can just about gaurentee you the piettas will gruop better. Maybe people just like the prettier finishes on the uberti's and there have been some problems with piettas hammers being a little soft, but the mainsprings are much "stiffer" on all piettas and some competition shooters will order weaker springs for their guns but i think it's just what you need for your fix.

Have you tried different nipples? The orfice in your nipples may be too big, allowing too much blow back.
I just read your post again and am confused. A 61 police? Isn't that a .36 caliber? Question

Uncle Lee,

Yep, your right, I dont know what I was thinking! Embarassed Anyway, I did try using different nipples - those expensive yellow ones - but they did'nt help and besides they're a bit long. There must be a solution - just wish I was smart enough to think of it.

Speaking of nipples,I went to the range today. And I used uncle mikes nipples.Did not like them as much as the factory pietta nipple.I tried no.10 caps to small, tried no.11 caps to big.So I switched back to factory nipples today. And no.10 CCI work like a charm. No more aftermarket nipples for me.I think i've tried them all and not much luck. I've stiffened a mainspring by putting the bottom of a broken mainspring under the one on the gun. If the broken one is too much then file the ever livin beegeezers ooutta it. Then try it again.
